At each end of the educational continuum, from pre-K to postsecondary (college) education, America and other parts of the world face profoundly disturbing challenges.  Many of the challenges we face at the international, national, state and local levels are directly attributable to what is happening, or not happening in the area of education.  Beyond concerns related to the economy, energy, healthcare, public safety and national security – the educational attainment of our citizenry, ultimately more than any other socio-economic issue, will determine if we prosper or perish as a viable and global force.

The credit crunch, home foreclosures, disappearing home equity, the escalating costs of education, and other challenges make it increasingly difficult for parents to send their children to college.  Also, other educational gaps related to proficiency in science, mathematics, engineering and technology, combined with deplorably disturbing high school drop-out rates in many parts of the nation, provide the backdrop and impetus guaranteed to fuel a heightened discussion between congressional leaders, the Obama-Biden Administration and community stakeholders. Most notably, the emerging discussions will assume a much needed level of intensity with the pending reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act, allowing the new Administration  an opportunity to substantially reshape federal education policy.
